Eligibility Requirements

STEP 1: QUALIFICATION

You can challenge the exam directly if you have the required hands-on experience. No formal Canadian apprenticeship is needed.

The National Standard Rules

To qualify for the Challenge pathway as a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic, you must meet two strict criteria:

The 9,315-Hour Rule

You must prove a minimum of 9,315 hours of directly related, hands-on work experience.

The 70% Scope Trap

Your documented experience cannot be limited to just one narrow task (like only residential AC). You must demonstrate that you have performed at least 70% of the diverse job tasks listed in the trade's official scope.

How to Prove Your Experience

You will need to submit specific declaration forms to your provincial authority. (See the general Challenge a Certification Exam process here). Here is how the documentation works, using BC as an example:

Employed Applicants

You will need an Employer Declaration. If you worked for a company, your direct supervisor must fill out this form detailing your specific tasks and hours.

Self-Employed (or Company Closed)

You will need a Statutory Declaration. If you were self-employed or cannot contact a past employer, you must submit this sworn statement backed by evidence like tax records.

Instructor's Tip: Getting the paperwork right is half the battle. Always read the official Declaration Forms Instructions Guide before submitting to avoid months of processing delays.

Find Your Provincial Authority

Rules are national, but applications are local. Select your province to find specific submission guidelines.
